The
Beginning-- BSLOL Chetek Club Project
About two years ago, Bob Speltz’
personal boat became available to BSLOL for restoration. Some talk
has taken place regarding the project, but there has been no visible
activity. Issues regarding ownership rights, expenses, work area,
magnitude of the project, etc., all had to be taken into
consideration before we could actually lay our hands on it to start
restoration. Those issues are now in control and the restoration can
begin!!
The 1954 14’Larson Chetek is a cedar strip hull with steam bent
ribs and a cedar fore deck. The engine Bob had on the boat remains
with it and appears to be in good shape. The hull is in need of
extensive work to bring it back to its original condition. Many of
the steam bent oak ribs and bottom strips are rotted and need
removal and replacement. The decks are tired and will also need
replacement. The effort needs volunteers to do a “Minnehaha
style” restoration; i.e. volunteers coming together regularly to
do assigned tasks. Greg Benson has offered one of the stalls in his
garage for the work area. This will allow a warm place to work and a
convenient, central location for most volunteers. Work will take
place under the supervision of Sherwood Heggen, Bob Clark and Jerry
Valley, who will take turns being at the job site during scheduled
work times.
To get this project going, we are in
need of volunteers. This is an invitation to any BSLOLers to come
forward and be involved in a fun project. You do not need boat
restoration skills, although they would come in handy. What is more
important is dependability and cooperation to see this project
through. Also, BSLOL will accept donations to the effort in the form
of tools, materials and supplies if you are able to contribute
better in that manner. The end result will be a restored boat which
belonged to one of the most recognizable names in antique and
classic boats....BOB SPELTZ! We have thoughts of using it in
displays at boat shows, at the nautical museum in Okoboji, Iowa and
anywhere else it can be used to promote boating. It also can be used
as a tool in educating the public about this great time in boating
history.
How can you get involved? Simply make
a telephone call to Sherwood Heggen at 432-4345 and say that you
would like to be part of the Bob Speltz Chetek Restoration Team.
Sherwood will take your name and number for the team list, and
contact you to attend the orientation/planning meeting at Greg’s
garage.
So-o-o-o-o-o-o-o, don’t just sit
there.....GO CALL HIM!
